Run Hard and Pass the Baton, St. Bonaventure joins the Recycle Race

St. Bonnie donated it's first bag to the truck this week...

Beto's picked up the recycling from my house this morning. I counted 48 bags points (22 large filled hefty size bags and 4 half filled bags). Plus the volunteers at the truck Meghan Malloy and Dillon Murry came to the track meet and took a couple of bags to the truck that day. It was a good day for VHS recycling! Now if the football, basketball and baseball teams all collected the recycling at their games we would really fill the trucks!

Thank you to all who brought recycling for the Track Team last week (twelve families.) You made $85 and your total is now $321.73.

It's like we are running the first leg of a long distance relay; we just passed a baton to St. Bonnie. Eventually, Ventura High will pass batons to inner-city schools in Detroit and NYC.

Gordon,
I borrowed 25 recycling containers from the city and had them by every trash can at the track invitational yesterday and now I have 25 bags of recycling on my driveway! We took some down to the truck yesterday but the meet wasn't done until 5:30. Can you help me get these bags to Betos ASAP? Should I call them or can I drop it all off today or tomorrow?

Now that's what I'm talking about


Note:  Beto's will pick up large amounts of recycling from anybody's house.  One Lincoln student's aunt works at Carrows, and periodically Beto's goes to her house to pick up 30- 50 bags.  Beto's will also sort the garbage from the recycling.

Recycle Sightings

• Last Saturday, I saw a well-dressed lady in a green business suit walking the two blocks to the high school, carrying a bag of  plastic bottles to The Recycle Truck on Poli.
• Friday morning at Lincoln, I saw a fourth grader, with his father, delivering his first two bags of recycling, writing his name on the raffle tix, and buy a bag of CornNuts from the Recycle Store.
• Friday after school, a third grader gave me his 15 raffle tix, did not want anything from the Store, just wanted to be in the next raffle. 
• Friday, three Will Rogers parents visited Lincoln, ready to start the program.  When I told them how slow things start out, they replied, "No problem, at least we have the three of us."
• Pink slips went out to twenty teachers at Buena

Hi, I'm Gordon Myers.  Here's the timeline for recyclenowforlife...

• 2005 Lincoln Elementary of Ventura starts recycling to save it's art program.
• 2010 Loma Vista Elementary starts recycling.  Lauren saw the excitement in her son.
• 2010 CPC pre-school starts recycling.  They are funding an additional teacher.
• September 2010 Ventura High School Cross Country students staff the Recycle Truck On Poli.
• Other high school clubs and teams join, ... Boys Volleyball, Key Club and now Track & Field
• November 2010, Cabrillo Middle School offers community service hours to students who donate recycling, 5 bags equals one hour; students also staff truck last Saturdays of month
• January 2011 Larry Bird starts managing the Recycle Truck on Poli.  We are getting about 17 donors a week.
• February 2011 CornNuts introduced to Lincoln recyclers: two or three tix per bag of CornNuts
• Today, March 8, 2011  Will Rogers Elementary's Fiona calls to start a program.  They can earn $60,000 a year on two bags a week. 
• March 2011 Loma Vista is getting $160 every two weeks, Lincoln $360 every two weeks; VHS has earned $2400 since September
